RATM, c'est un quatuor composé de Zack de la Rocha (chant), Tom Morello (guitare), Tim Bob (basse) et Brad Wilk (batterie). Ils se rencontrent en 1991 dans le comté d'Orange, aux États-Unis. Une formule énergique, faite de rock, de punk avec un soupçon de hip hop et une série d'enregistrements effectués dans la foulée.

Douze morceaux qui prennent place sur une cassette qui s'arrache immédiatement (seulement 5000 exemplaires).Suffisant toutefois pour attirer l'attention des plus grands labels du pays et publier un album éponyme en 92 .

Ce casting de choc permet à Rage Against The Machine de faire passer ses idées auprès d'adolescents frondeurs et de vendre des millions de disques. Les singles "Killing In The Name" et "Bomb Track" font de leur premier album éponyme en 1992 l'un des best-sellers de l'année.

Pourtant, la polémique est vive quant au discours de ce nouveau groupe. C'est ainsi que "Bullet in the Head" est interdit sur les ondes américaines et que le texte de "Killing In The Name" est retiré de la pochette du disque. Rage Against The Machine en profite pour accréditer sa thèse de l'oppression.

En 1996, Rage Against The Machine sort "Evil Empire" qui est un nouveau triomphe aux États-Unis meme si il n'a pas autant de succès auprès des fans. Le groupe multiplie donc les apparitions, que ce soit en concert ou en s'impliquant dans de nobles causes comme l'aide financière aux écoles des quartiers défavorisés de Los Angeles. Mais c'est dans les bacs que les quatre gaillards sont attendus au tournant !

Ils renouent avec la réussite en 1999 grâce à "The Battle Of Los Angeles" et au clip sulfureux de "Sleep Now In The Fire". Un tournage qui donne lieu à une telle émeute que la bourse américaine est obligée de fermer une heure plus tôt qu'à l'accoutumée.

L'année suivante, l'ambiance s'est fortement dégradée au sein de RATM et Zack quitte le navire juste après la parution de "Renegades". Un album constitué notamment de reprises des Rolling Stones et de Cypress Hill.

RATM se cherche alors un nouveau chanteur. Il le trouve en la personne de Chris Cornell de Soundgarden et publie un DVD en mars 2002. Il comprend des performances live, datant essentiellement de la période 1994/1996, et leurs clips en version non censurées.

Le dernier enregistrement du groupe est "Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium", paru en 2003 et enregistré à Los Angeles en septembre 2000. Depuis, le groupe s'est rebaptisé Audioslave et a sorti un premier album éponyme en 2002.

Arch Enemy a été créé par Michael Amott quand celui-ci a quitté le groupe Carcass. Les deux guitaristes Michael Amott et son frère Christopher Amott se sont regroupés avec le chanteur Johan Liiva et le batteur de session Daniel Erlandsson.

Le premier disque du groupe, "Black Earth", est sorti en 1996. alors que le succès est plus modéré en Suède. À ce moment, Arch Enemy était plus un projet solo qu'un vrai groupe : Michael Amott a écrit lui-même toutes les chansons, et a même joué de la basse sur ce disque, contrairement à ce qu'indique les notes du CD, qui liste Johan Liiva dans le rôle du bassiste. Michael Amott a révélé plus tard qu'il a écrit les crédits de cette manière pour que l'album ressemble plus à celui d'un groupe soudé.

En 1998, Arch Enemy sort "Stigmata", pour lequel le bassiste Martin Bengtsson et le batteur Peter Wildoer rejoignent le groupe. Cet album obtient l'attention d'une plus large audience, et gagne en popularité en Europe et en Amérique. Il est aussi le premier album d'Arch Enemy à sortir dans le monde entier.

En 1999, Sharlee D'Angelo prend la place de bassiste, et Daniel Erlendsson est une nouvelle fois recruté pour s'occuper de la batterie, cette fois de manière permanente. "Burning Bridges" sort, puis est vite suivi par le live "Burning Japan Live 1999", initialement prévu pour sortir uniquement au Japon, mais qui est plus tard distribué partout à la demande des fans. Pendant la tournée de Burning Bridges, Sharlee D'Angelo a été temporairement remplacé deux fois, par Dick Lövgren , puis par Roger Nilsson. "Burning Bridges" a marqué un changement au niveau du son principal d'Arch Enemy, qui opte maintenant pour une approche plus mélodique, tout en gardant la touche plus brutale des deux premiers albums.

En 2001, on demande à Johan Liiva de quitter le groupe. Michael Amott déclara qu'il voulait un frontman plus dynamique, et que les performances en concert du chanteur n'étaient pas suffisantes par rapport au reste du groupe. Johan Liiva est vite remplacé par Angela Gossow, une journaliste amateur allemande, chanteuse de death metal, qui avait donné une cassette démo à Christopher Amott un peu plus tôt au cours d'une interview avec celui-ci. Angela Gossow s'est affirmée en chanteuse réellement compétente, et elle a été accueillie chaleureusement par la plupart des fans.

Le premier album avec la nouvelle chanteuse fut "Wages Of Sin", sorti en 2001. Au mois de décembre de la même année, Arch Enemy a pris part au concert "Japan's Beast Feast 2002", en jouant aux côtés de Slayer et Motörhead.
"Anthems Of Rebellion" sort en 2003 et apporte quelques innovations, comme l'utilisation d'une seconde voix en harmonie dans la chanson "End Of The Line". En novembre, le groupe publie l'EP "Dead Eyes See No Future", qui contient des extraits live, ainsi que 3 reprises de Manowar, Megadeth et Carcass.
En juin 2005, Arch Enemy termine l'enregistrement de leur sixième album, Doomsday Machine. En juillet, le guitariste Christopher Amott quitte le groupe, pour se recentrer sur sa vie personnelle. Il a été temporairement remplacé par le guitariste Gus G., puis par Fredrik Åkesson. Christopher revient de manière permanente en Mars 2007, peu après que le groupe soit rentré en studio pour commencer l'enregistrement de leur nouvel album avec le producteur Fredrik Nordström. Fredrik Åkesson devient pendant ce temps le nouveau guitariste rythmique d'Opeth.

Les suédois enregistrent en 2004 un album de lives (enregistrés à Paris) et de reprises (Megadeth, Manowar, Carcass) : « Dead Eyes See No Future ». L'année suivante, la formation sort leur 6ème opus « Doomsday Machine ». Après l'enregistrement de l'album, le guitariste Christopher Amott quitte le groupe. Il est remplacé, dans un premier temps, par Gus G, puis par Fredrik Akesson qui assurera la tournée promotionnelle de « Doomsday Machine ». Il réintègre le groupe le 22 mars 2007.
